More about The Easy Read Company
The Easy Read Company was set up because we strongly believe that people with learning disabilities are ‘experts by experience’ when it comes to creating Easy Read materials. We also believe that more people with learning disabilities and/or on the autism spectrum could be gaining the benefits of employment given the opportunity.
The Easy Read Company founder Toni Edwards has over 19 years experience working with people with learning disabilities and on the autism spectrum. Her roles include advising and supporting organisations to make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of people with learning disabilities. She has worked within the NHS, local authority and third sector. Toni is also an experienced graphic designer and has been creating easy to understand materials for over 10 years.

What is Easy Read?
Easy Read is a format of information that uses pictures or video alongside ‘plain English’ text. More about Easy Read >
What is Easy Read?
Easy Read information is presented in short easy to understand sentences, written or spoken in plain English, with images or video backing up each key message. The images used can be photos, illustrations or symbols. Font size is usually a minimum of 16pt. Documents are best kept short, and preferably no longer than 20 pages.
The Easy Read format is preferred by many people with learning disabilities. But it is useful for anyone who prefers clear jargon free information.
The Equality Act (2010) requires all public service organisations to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for people with a disability, so that they receive equitable provision and treatment. Providing Easy read information is a key ‘reasonable adjustment’ that may be needed by people with learning disabilities.
Under The Care Act (2014), NHS and publicly funded adult social care providers are legally required to implement the ‘Accessible Information Standard’. This includes providing Easy Read information for those that need it. This needs to be done by 31st July 2016.
In order to create really good Easy Read you should involve your target audience right from the start. Our team includes people with and without learning disabilties to create high quality Easy Read information.
